J-Cherry Bio

There are two parts of myself, Jennifer Shafer Wood, mother, visual artist and freelance journalist… J-Cherry, is my alter ego… the fearless spirit that loves the stage, music, poetry and people. This part of myself has been around my whole life, the part of me that sings and performs, but she was in the shadows until poetry freed her to come out and sing... Born and raised in music and art I have been writing poetry since I learned to write. As a child I sang in school, and church choir, but stopped singing publicly, except to my children, for many years. I’ve learned that you're never to old, and it's never to late to do what you love! To find yourself in your childhood, and rediscover a passion you’ve always had, but buried to become an adult. J-Cherry allows me to be a free spirit…

My father was a multitalented jazz composer and musician. He died in 2001. My mother is a jazz pianist and composer, and my stepfather is a multi gifted jazz and blues composer, and musician. We played music in a band called, Thin Air, and performed throughout the State of Connecticut in 2007/2009. Currently, I play with the Strawberries. I am also the host and producer of, Monday Night Anything Goes Open Mic at the Buttonwood Tree, in Middletown, CT, and the producer/radio host of, VOICE of the CITY, airing on WESU 88.1 FM, Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:00PM. Live and local... this ain't no commercial radio!
